Another CARIFTA Gold for Dominica
Pierre Charles Secondary School student, Shanee Angol, made Dominica proud when she captured another gold medal for Dominica at the 42nd Junior CARIFTA Games which came off in The Bahamas from March 29 to April 1, 2013.
Shanee who took a bronze medal in that event one year before captured the girls' Under-17 javelin throw with a distance of 43.89 metres. She outdid Barbadian Hayley Matthews (40.30m) and Caymanian Daneliz Thomas (37.99m) in the final field of nine.
The young athlete's gold medal was Dominica's fourth in five years.
Dominica added three bronze medals to its tally. The United States-based Thea Lafond won third place in girls' U-20 high jump with 1.82m behind Jeanelle Scheper, St Lucia 1.92 and Akela Jones, Barbados 1.84; and triple jump with 12.68m behind Jamaicans Shardia Lawrence 12.99 and Tamara Moncrieffe 12.95.
Andre Bazil notched up Dominica's fourth medal in the boys' U-20javelin with 60.24 metres behind Kershon Walcott 63.41 and John Jones, Barbados 63.24.
The fancied Luan Gabriel, according to team manager Cedric Harris was not ready for the 100m, and stayed out, and then came last in the field of eight in the girls' U-20 200m dash in 24.66 seconds. Bahamian Shaunae Miller won in 22.77 seconds followed by Sherica Jackson, Jamaica 22.84 and Carmiesha Cox, Bahamas 22.66.
Jamaica finished the meet ahead of the region for the 29th straight year with 68 medals including 28 gold 25 silver 15 bronze followed by Trinidad & Tobago 32 medals: 9g 12 s 11b.
