Australia drowns West Indies

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – West Indies lost their last three wickets cheaply to crash to an inevitable 277-run defeat to Australia in the second and final Test, 40 minutes after lunch on the penultimate day of the contest at Sabina Park here Sunday.

Resuming from their lunch position of 72 for seven, West Indies were dismissed for a paltry 114, to follow up their first innings effort of 220.

Captain Denesh Ramdin, unbeaten ono 19 at lunch, top-scored with 29 while tail-ender Veerasammy Permaul finished on 23 not out.

The pair put together the best stand of the innings with 49 for the eighth wicket.

Left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc was the best bowler with three for 34 while off-spinner Nathan Lyon (2-12), pacer Josh Hazlewood (2-18) and left-armer Mitchell Johnson (2-23) all picked up two wickets apiece.

Australia captured the series 2-0 following their nine wicket win in the first Test inside three days in Dominica a week ago.

Ramdin was first to go after lunch, caught by his opposite number Michael Clarke at second slip off Johnson, to leave the Windies on 111 for eight.

The end then came swiftly as Kemar Roach popped Lyon to Steve Smith at short leg for three in the next over and Jerome Taylor missed a huge heave at the very next delivery and was bowled.

Earlier, West Indies lost five wickets in the morning session, after resuming the day on 16 for two.

They suffered their first blow in the fifth over of the morning when Shane Dowrich played across a good length ball from Starc and had his off-stump disturbed, after adding three to his overnight one.

Twenty balls later, left-hander Darren Bravo poked tentatively at one from Hazlewood pitched on off-stump and edged to gully where Shaun Marsh gobbled up a catch inches from the turf.

Wickets continued to tumble with Jermaine Blackwood bottom-edging a timid drive at Hazlewood onto his stumps without scoring on the verge of the first hour, and Shai Hope lasted 36 balls for his 16 before playing all around one from left-armer Mitchell Johnson and having his stumps rattled.

Plummeting quickly at 55 for six, West Indies endured yet another blow when first innings hero Jason Holder was out softly, clipping a simple catch off an innocuous Shane Watson delivery, to short mid-wicket where Starc snared the offering.
