Basketball closes good season
The Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) closed its 2013 LIME National Basketball season with an awards ceremony at the Prevo Cinemall on Saturday September 14.
Dominating the awards were the play-off champion teams in all three divisions of the league, namely Gatorade Blazers of Massacre of the DOMLEC Premier League; Fashion Line falcons of Pichelin of the Pizza Hut Delivery Division 1 League; and Police Sports Club in the Division 2 League. DABA president Mickey Joseph in welcome remarks told the assembled players, sponsors' representatives, referees, media and association members that they had had a good season. The leagues were good and competitive and that teams that had been trying to win over the years had succeeded. Joseph noted that it was good to see new teams coming and challenging the experienced teams.
La Plaine Avengers won the league competition with Police S C going on to win the play-off at the expense of Elvis Morancie Welding Services Green Hornets. Avengers besides their regular season award copped awards for best offensive team and best defensive team with Barny Williams being the coach of the division. Police's Lenny Dangleben was MVP with Esmond Andrew of Mahaut Gators being the top scorer.
Falcons were both league and play-off champions. They copped best offensive and best defensive team awards; MVP in Kijuan Thomas; top scorer in Yannick Regis; and best coach in Levi Baron. Blazers took out Signman X-men 3-1 in their best of five finals, but United Insurance Sharks were league champions. Blazers' Felix Thomas captured his second MVP award in three seasons. Sharks were best offensive and defensive team; and best coach in Kirt Martin.
The top scorer in the Premier League was Derrison Anthony of Paix Bouche Eagles. Ferdina Frampton-Lime, Adina Valentine-Domlec, Devon Esprit-Dominica Brewery & Beverages (Vitamalt), and Deannie Peter-Pizza Hut Delivery.
Former DABA official Arlington James made a presentation of unrecognised unusual statistics during the 2013 season for the first time ever to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the DABA. Copies can be obtained through the DABA for $20 or $40 for colour.
