Basketballers Suspended

Angus Julian of Spartans United Stars got a two year suspension from the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association when the DABA met in emergency session on Sunday June 30, 2013 to deal with an on-court altercation between players of premier division teams D-Treads No Look and Paix Bouche Eagles.

Esmond Andrew of Mahaut Gators got a two game suspension for an altercation with an opposing player of Spartans United Stars after the game on June 20, 2013. Isan Lestrade, Freddie Anselm and Josiah Modess of Spartans United Stars also received two-match suspension for their part in that altercation.

But Julian was more extreme when he pulled a weapon on an executive member during that altercation between his team and Gators.

Five players of D Treads No Look and Paix Bouche Eagles received suspensions ranging from two to three matches for getting into a fracas at Lindo Park on Saturday June 29, 2013. An altercation developed between Andel George of Eagles and Garth Joseph of No Look during the fourth quarter of the match resulting in a stoppage. A number of Eagles players left their bench to assist George in attacking Joseph.

The referees blew off the match in an attempt to stop the altercation. The DABA met in emergency session on Sunday June 30 and decided that the teams would get no points, and the match would not be replayed; Garth Joseph of No Look, Hendricks Holsborough, Abishah Thomas, Tyson David and Andel George of Paix Bouche Eagles received automatic two-match suspensions as stipulated by the rules governing altercation between opposing players. Andel George received an additional match suspension for his role in initiating and encouraging the altercation.

The Basketball Association also took the opportunity to deal with other reports of ill-discipline: Shamal Tonge of Sobe Grand Bay Pros was given a three-game suspension for verbally abusing a referee during and after a game on June 27, 2013.

Clem Telemacque of Wesley Raptors got a three-game suspension for verbally abusing a referee during and after a game on June 5, 2013.
