Panama calls for urgent meeting on Venezuelan turmoil

PANAMA CITY, Feb. 25 (Xinhua/ Sun) -- Panama Tuesday proposed that foreign ministers of the Organization of American States (OAS) member countries meet to discuss the political turmoil in Venezuela.

The Panamanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the proposal aimed to let OAS members exchange ideas, and help Venezuelan government and opposition factions to resolve differences through dialogue and end the two-week violent protests.

According to the OAS charter, member countries could call for consultative meetings to discuss matters of urgency or common interests.

Also on Tuesday, Uruguay's President Jose Mujica offered to talk with the Venezuelan side "in a timely manner" to end the protests, which have led to several deaths and scores of injuries.

"The most important thing right now is that people should calm down (and) discuss their problems," said Mujica.
