Police's fatal killing of man sparks tension in Kingston
KINGSTON, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Local police's fatally shooting of a man in Tivoli Gardens near the downtowm of Jamaica's capital Kingston sparked tension between lawmen and residents on Friday.
According to the police, the 19-year-old man was shot on Friday morning while trying to escape from police inquiry, and later died in hospital. A semi-automatic pistol with ammunition was recovered from the offender.
Angry residents blocked roads, threw stones and bottles to the police, asking for detailed investigation into the accident.
Meanwhile, a group of gunmen attacked the local police post, but failed to cripple the facility's function, according to the police.
Teams of the Jamaica Defense Force were deployed to join the police petrol in the area.
The Corporate Communication United of the Jamaica Constabulary Force reported a police officer sustained injury on his head during the confrontation with the residents.
An traffic advisory has been issued to ask motorists to avoid the community due to "sporadic gunfire" from criminals.
