Roberts is new Judge

Former Solicitor General of Dominica Wynante Mary Adrien Roberts has been appointed judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, an informed source has disclosed.

The source requested anonymity because the appointment has not been officially released.

Roberts is to be assigned to Grenada from September 1, 2015.

The Chairman of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission (JLSC) made the appointment recently.

Roberts has had more than 20 years' experience in practicing law in the Caribbean and especially in Dominica.

A graduate of the University of the West Indies and the Sir Norman Manley Law School, Roberts holds the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (Hons) from the University of the West Indies and Certificate of Legal Education (LEC) from Norman Manley.

From the George Washington University Law School she holds a Master of Laws (LLM) and from Loyola School of Law & Tulane Law School Public Law Centre she holds Certificate in International Legislative Drafting. She is a former President of the Dominica Bar Association.

From 2003 to 2012 Roberts was Solicitor General in the Dominica public service; she also held acting positions as permanent secretary and Director of Public Prosecutions. Roberts was a magistrate for two years, from 1995 to 1997.

As the Sun reported earlier her most recent post was Deputy Attorney General in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

She resigned in May 2015 after four months on the job, the Turks and Caicos Weekly News reported.

Offering a reason for Roberts' sudden resignation the website, quoting Governor Peter Beckingham, stated: "Ms. Adrien-Roberts told me some weeks ago that she had been offered, unexpectedly, a senior appointment in the Eastern Caribbean.

"I said she should not let her position in TCI stop her accepting this important job, and she subsequently decided, quite reasonably, to take it.

"She has helpfully given us more than the required notice in order to seek a successor."

Roberts follows Davidson Kelvin Baptiste who was the last Dominican to be appointed judge of the ECSC.

Baptiste has now been acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal.
