Salisbury man awaits sentence following buggery conviction

In less than a month, a Salisbury man will know his fate following his conviction of buggery against a minor.

Shamiguel James who was indicted on three counts –buggery, unlawful sexual connection, and indecent assault – plead not guilty to all the charges and following a trial was found guilty of the more severe charge of buggery.

The facts of the case are that on July 24, 2016, at Salisbury, James committed the sexual act on a 12-year-old boy against his will.

The one-week trial which was heard by a nine-member jury and presided over by High court Judge Justice Wynante Adrien-Robert, came to a close on June 22, 2022, with the guilty verdict.

The prosecution case was led by a state attorney attached to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Daina Matthew while Peter Alleyne of the Legal Aid Clinic represented James.

Following his conviction, Justice Adrien-Roberts ordered a social inquiry report on the convict on or before July 15, 2022, and submissions from the defense and prosecution before handing down her sentence on July 22, 2022. James is now on remand in custody at the Dominica State Prison awaiting his sentence.
