St Lucian admitted to practice law in Dominica

St Lucian Shervon Pierre was admitted to practice at the Dominica bar by resident judge Justice Thomas W. R. Astaphan at a special sitting of the Roseau High Court on Friday, July 7, 2023.

Attorney Satcha Kissoon made the application for Pierre's admission as a barrister and solicitor in Dominica. He told the court that Ms. Pierre had been a law practitioner in St Lucia for ten years. He knew her as a fit and proper person to practice law here. She had completed her Legal Education Certificate at the Sir Hugh Wooding Law School with merit. She went on to further studies, during which she excelled in first grade.

Attorney Carlita Benjamin supported the application.

Two affidavits had been submitted to the Registrar with the appropriate receipt attached. Judge Astaphan said he was satisfied that Shervon Pierre had met the conditions of the Act and was a fit and proper person to practice at the bar.

The court clerk went on to swear Ms. Pierre as a barrister and solicitor and to have her sign the appropriate register before the court.

Ms Pierre, in her remarks of thanks, noted the thrust to make the OECS and CARICOM one space by allowing professionals to work inter-country. She added that being admitted as a member of the Bar of Dominica was a pleasure and honour.

Justice Astaphan welcomed her to the Bar in Dominica and praised the Sir Hugh Wooding Law School, noting that Director of Public Prosecutions Sherma Dalrymple is a fine example of what comes from Sir Hugh Wooding. He urged her to continue as she had been doing, practise with humility, and do her best. He asked her to shed the arrogance that (some) young lawyers come into the profession with and do as our esteemed DPP.

"We are one people, and we should be welcoming each other", the judge said.
