WICB bowls Shane a Doosra

So far, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is silent on the future of Shane Shillingford, the 32 year old Dominican off spinner.

In response to our emailed enquiry, Dave Cameron, the WICB president said he was "re-directing" our questions to Michael Muirhead, the WICB Chief Executive Officer and Richard Pybus, the Director of Cricket.

In response Pybus said: "You need to direct specific questions to Phil on the coaching side and Clive on the selection side. They are the only ones who can answer questions on players."

Chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd and Coach Phil Simmons had not responded by press time.

In December 2013, Shillingford was suspended from bowling in international cricket for the second time in his career during the West Indies' tour of New Zealand. The International Cricket Council (ICC) stated that the degree of elbow flex in Shillingford's standard off-break and Doosra deliveries exceeded the permitted 15 degrees.

Shillingford underwent remedial work on his action and was cleared for an international return in March 2014. However, with his Doosra still deemed illegal, he struggled in the first series after his return, taking five wickets in two Tests against New Zealand.

Asked about Shillingford's future a former regional cricketer, who did not want to be named, said "Shane has been left in the dark by the WICB and it seems his future as a West Indies cricketer is over."

But in an exclusive interview with the SUN, Shillingford said he is optimistic about his return to Test cricket.

"Things are going on pretty well," he said. "I see myself regaining my pick back on the West Indies team. In fact, that is foremost on my mind at this time and so I am taking it from stride to stride.

"The selectors have a job to do and I also have mine although even when you take wickets or score runs it does not always guarantee you a place on the West Indies team and we have seen that over the years. It's just a matter of keep performing and enjoy the game as much as possible".

Shillingford added: "I have no bowling problems at present; whatever happened a few years ago has been dealt with and thrown out of the window. I have gone to Australia and done the necessary work. Presently my confidence is high as I train and work to improve on my various bowling variations".

So far Shillingford has played 16 Test matches and taken 70 wickets at an average of 34.56 with an economy rate of 3.09. He has six five-wicket hauls and has taken ten wickets in a Test twice. His best bowling is 6-49 v Zimbabwe in Barbados in March 2013.

He holds the record for the second fastest Test match fifty, off 25 balls, against New Zealand on Day Four of the first Test match of the series at Kingston, Jamaica.
